We are a mission-driven team with aspirations to evolve both the traditional wine and non-alcoholic wine industries. Wine brings people together, and we strive to ensure everyone has a seat at the table so we can raise our glasses together and cheer our shared successes.
“Oceano Wines was founded with the idea that California Pinot Noir and California Chardonnay could use an updated approach. The over-oaked, buttery and high alcohol examples made popular in the 80s and 90s are still prevalent in the market today. Oceano produces refreshingly vibrant wines that are naturally lower in alcohol, a reflection of the vineyard site— cool ocean breezes, coastal fog and seafront soils. We are focused on making our wines as sustainable as possible and running our business in a socially responsible way.”RACHEL MARTIN, PRESIDENT & VINTNER
OUR WINEMAKING PHILOSOPHY
The first step for sculpting wine is to choose the stone, which is the wine vineyard site. Spanish Springs Vineyard, a California wine vineyard, offers a complex mix of sandstone, shale, and limestone at the base, with soils reflective of these same sedimentary rocks. This gives us a great springboard.
SPANISH SPRINGS VINEYARD
Perched on the slopes of Price Canyon, Spanish Springs Vineyard is closer to the Pacific Ocean than any other wine vineyard in California. This superb location is ideal for growing chardonnay and pinot noir grapes. The ocean fog and marine breezes cradle and nurture the developing fruit, protecting them from the harsh sun. Our unique climate ensures that the grapes never over ripen, yielding premium wines that are vibrant and with a naturally lower alcohol content.
As viticulturists and winemakers, we are keenly aware of the impact we have on the world. We use sustainable farming practices and renewable energy to lessen our impact and become as carbon neutral as possible. We understand the need to practice sustainability, not just for our winemaking, but for all of our futures. Oceano Wines is committed to eco-friendly, vegan practices in both our agricultural and production processes.
We are taking action to make a better world. Let’s work together to make a difference!
JOIN OUR JOURNEY
As fine wine consumers, you can help us address environmental and social inequities. Support sustainably produced wines with your purchases. Ask your local retailers to carry handmade, earth-friendly wines produced by non-traditional artisans. Together, we can disrupt the status quo and create a broader, more vibrant wine landscape that benefits everyone.
The next step is to understand the grapes and choose the chisel to highlight what sets apart the site. To capture and maintain the exceptional natural acidity in the chardonnay, the sculptor must use the gentlest press so we don’t extract harsh phenolics and excessive oxidation. With pinot noir, in order to capture the delicate floral and red fruit aromas, precise fermentation temperature control and sensitive cap-management techniques are crucial.
“The last ingredient is adaptability. Every vintage imparts its own characteristics, and “tools” that worked in prior vintages may not work in others. The ability to adjust the plan to capture the delicate aroma and flavor compounds takes foresight, instinct, technical understanding, and experience. With this approach, Oceano Wines will confidently reflect the best the vintage and site has to offer each year.”MARBUE MARKE, WINEMAKER
